Townships are approximately 36 square miles, and made up of 36 sections, which are approximately one square mile. Townships are 6 sections on each side. Section corners are described in USGS 7.5 minute quadrangles, which the Department of Water, Energy and Environment used to create points in the southeast corner of each section for the State of Nebraska. Other corners were digitized as necessary, such as irregular or state boundary sections. The Department of Water, Energy and Environment generated section polygons based on these section points. Townships were then derived from these section polygon features. Sections are also subdivided into quarter, and quarter-quarter sections, which are generally 160 and 40 acres, respectfully.Sections are numbered boustrophedonically within townships, starting from the northeast corner, then alternating the numbering scheme with each row. Quarter sections are named by intercardinal direction (e.g. NE), and quarter-quarter sections are named by adding a second intercardinal direction (e.g. SWNE). These datasets should be used for general locational information only, and may not accurately depict properly surveyed boundaries.&lt;/SPAN&gt;&lt;/P&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;&lt;/DIV&gt;</idAbs>
<idPurp>This dataset provides township boundary polygons for the State of Nebraska. The township boundaries were generated by merging sections in like townships into a single polygon. Sections were derived by descriptions in USGS quadrangles.</idPurp>

<measDesc>The section corner codes were checked against a list of valid codes through a FORTRAN program on a PC. Additional checks were made on an Arc/Info workstation. All codes were valid. Maps were generated and a 100% visual check was approved. All data was checked several times through several error checking programs in Arc/Info 6.0 and 7.0 to determine if there was any section corners left unattributed or corners with wrong attributes.</measDesc>

<stepDesc>The township and range polygons were extracted from the section corner polygons using ARC/INFO. The goal was to digitize enough about each section so that the general shape and location of each section could be defined. 7 1/2-minute quads were used when they were available. The quads for an area of Cherry, Box Butte, and Sheridan counties were not yet complete for this process so 12 15-minute quads were substituted for 48 7 1/2-minute quads. The south east corner of each section was digitized and that was enough to locate and define most of the sections. For instance, the SE corner of section 6 is also the SW corner of section 5, the NW corner of section 8 and the NE corner for section 7. However, this is not usually the case when the border of the section is a standard parallel. In these cases, the NE corner of sections 1-6 was also digitized and labeled as 41-46 to differentiate from the SE corner labels of 1-6. These are referred to as correction corners. Only section corners that could be specifically located on the 7 1/2 minute map were digitized and labeled 1-36 or 41-46. Some of the corners (such as in stream beds) had to be estimated since they were not identified on the maps. 50 was added to the label to indicate that it was an estimated corner. The range of estimated standard corners was 51-86 and 91-96 for the estimated correction corners. An ArcInfo process called "dissolve" was performed on the section corner polygon coverage. The "dissolve" was made on the township and range attributes to dissolve all of the internal section lines. This left only the township borders to create the township and range polygons.</stepDesc>
