Description: The Department of Water, Energy and Environment (DWEE) uses spatial representations of Certified Acres (CA), or areas of land which can legally be irrigated for groundwater use, surface water use, or a mix of the two (comingled). In Nebraska, the Natural Resources Districts (NRDs) are the entity responsible for groundwater permitting, and DWEE is responsible for surface water permitting. Spatial data of CA is used by DWEE for a variety of reasons, including but not limited to: Use as an input in models that calculate water balance, determine crop type, determine irrigation status, verify progress toward DWEE and NRD shared goals, ensure compliance with intra- and interstate agreements, observe conservation practices and trends, assess NRD water use transfers, to assess water usage on a variety of spatial scales, and to use generally in other applicable circumstances. Generally, spatial representations of CA data are made on an annualized basis. DWEE does not produce any of the groundwater-only CA spatial representations. Spatial representations of groundwater-only and NRD-attributed comingled CA are produced, maintained, provided by, and the responsibility of the individual NRDs. Data represented in this layer may not match exactly with data that is used in models or other analyses. These spatial representations do not indicate areas of land that is irrigated in the year it represents, only the legally allowed possibility to irrigate. In this dataset, CPNRD groundwater-only and NRD-indicated comingled is represented using data from 2020.
